| Uruguay's
Colonia del Sacramento, a World Heritage Site, was founded by
Portuguese settlers from Brazil, 1680, and was a major smuggling port
directly across the Rio de la Plata from Buenos Aires. The Barrio
Histórica has narrow streets with many, many fine old colonial
buildings in excellent condition. There are also first class
hotels and superb restaurants within the district. We spent three
nights and four great days seeing Colonia and Real de San Carlos.
It is an easy inter urban bus ride from Montevideo to Colonia.
Or, take the ferry (Buquebus) from Buenos Aires - one hour. |
Fairly
near to Colonia is Real de San Carlos - which one can get to on a local
bus - that in the early 20th century was a thriving resort with a major
bull fight arena, grand hotel and casino, Frontón court, and race
course. Today most of these buildings are deteriorating. On
the Rio are fine resort hotels and restaurants. This is worth the
trip. [Posted June 27, 2006] |
