Melaka (Malacca) was the most important city on the trade route through the Straits of Melaka (Malacca) until into the 19th Century when it was replaced in importance by Singapore. Melaka was founded by a Sumatran; then sequentially dominated by Chinese traders and then under the control of the Portuguese, Dutch, and British until Malaysia received its independence.
The center of the city is a World Heritage Site that is charming, interesting, and easy to walk about. It is filled with historic buildings representing all of the various groups that have dominated this port city.
