Singapore is an independent nation located on the southern tip of the Malay Penninsula. It started as a small Malay fishing village, but gradually grew with the influx of Chinese traders and eventually the dominance of the British in 1819.
It is strategically located and is a major financial and trading center in South Asia. The city-state is very modern with tall building, fashionable shopping areas, and many ethnic groups (with 75% being of Chinese descent). The various culutural traditions and religions exist side-by-side in a vibrant city. Our visit to Singapore was short; we used it as a resting point before our five week tour of Indonesia and Malaysia.
